Abstract
Sustainable development means improving life today without destroying the future. In Africa, this idea must be explained using real situations on the continent. One big problem is lack of electricity. In Cameroon, many people still live without stable power. This article explains sustainable development using Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): Affordable and Clean Energy. It shows that energy is very important for development. Using examples from Cameroon, this paper explains how clean and affordable energy can help people live better and help the country grow.
Introduction
Sustainable development means meeting people’s needs today without harming future generations. This idea is good, but Africa—and especially Cameroon—has many challenges.
In Cameroon, many areas do not have regular electricity. Even in cities like Yaoundé and Douala, power cuts happen often. In villages, some people have never had electricity. Because of this, development is slow.
People cannot study well, businesses suffer, and hospitals cannot work properly. That is why sustainable development in Cameroon must first solve the energy problem.
This is where SDG 7 becomes important. It focuses on making sure everyone has access to clean and affordable energy. This article explains how this goal can help redefine sustainable development in Cameroon and Africa.
Why Energy is Important (Example of Cameroon)
Energy is part of daily life. In Cameroon, we see its importance everywhere.
In many homes, people use firewood and charcoal to cook
Students cannot read at night when there is no light
Small businesses stop working during power cuts
Hospitals sometimes lack stable electricity for machines
For example, a student in a village without electricity may fail in school, not because they are not intelligent, but because they cannot study at night.
Also, many small businesses in Cameroon depend on electricity. Hairdressers, welders, and shop owners lose money when power goes off.
This shows that energy is the foundation of development. Without it, progress is very slow.
Redefining Sustainable Development in Cameroon
In Cameroon, sustainable development should be understood in a simple way:
Helping people live better by giving them clean energy, creating opportunities, and protecting the environment.
This idea can be explained in four simple points:
1. Energy is a Basic Need
In Cameroon, electricity should not be seen as a luxury. It is a necessity. When people have light, they can work, study, and live better.
For example, with electricity:
Students can read at night
Businesses can grow
Families can feel safer
2. Use of Simple Energy Solutions
Many villages in Cameroon are far from electricity lines. Instead of waiting for big projects, simple solutions can help, such as:
Solar panels on houses
Small solar systems in villages
Community mini-grids
For example, in the northern part of Cameroon, solar energy is very useful because there is a lot of sunlight.
3. Equal Access for Everyone
Not everyone in Cameroon has the same access to energy. Rural areas suffer more than cities.
Women also face more problems because they:
Spend hours looking for firewood
Are exposed to smoke while cooking
Clean energy, like gas or solar cookers, can make their lives easier and healthier.
4. Protecting the Environment
In Cameroon, cutting trees for firewood leads to deforestation. This damages the environment.
Using clean energy like solar power can:
Reduce cutting of trees
Reduce pollution
Protect nature for the future
Renewable Energy in Cameroon
Cameroon has many natural resources that can help produce clean energy:
Sunlight → good for solar energy
Rivers → good for hydroelectric power (like the Lom Pangar dam)
Wind in some regions
Renewable energy can help Cameroon in many ways:
Create jobs for young people
Provide electricity to villages
Reduce pollution
Improve the economy
For example, solar panels can be installed in schools and hospitals in rural areas where there is no electricity.
What Cameroon Can Do
To improve energy access, the government and other actors can:
Invest in solar and hydroelectric projects
Support private companies in the energy sector
Train young people in energy-related jobs
Encourage the use of clean energy in homes
Work with other African countries
For example, if the government supports solar energy companies, more villages can get electricity faster.
Challenges in Cameroon
Even if solutions exist, there are still problems:
Not enough money for energy projects
Frequent power cuts in cities
Lack of awareness about solar energy
Some rural areas are difficult to reach
Also, some people do not trust new technologies because they are not used to them.
These challenges must be solved for sustainable development to succeed.
Conclusion
Sustainable development in Cameroon must focus on real problems, especially energy. Without electricity, development is not possible.
Using SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Cameroon can improve the lives of its people. Clean energy can help students succeed, businesses grow, and the environment stay safe.
