Introduction

Sustainable development is one of the most important global priorities today. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, Sustainable Development Goal 8 stands out as particularly relevant to young people and future entrepreneurs.

As a business student in Cameroon, I believe that SDG 8 is not just a global objective, but a personal mission that can shape my future and the future of my community.

SDG 8 focuses on promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

It aims to:

•Reduce unemployment, especially among youth

• Encourage entrepreneurship and innovation

•Ensure fair wages and safe working conditions

•Eliminate forced labor and child labor

This goal highlights the importance of creating opportunities that allow individuals to work in dignity and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Importance of SDG 8 in the African Context

In many African countries, including Cameroon, young people face significant challenges such as unemployment, underemployment, and limited access to opportunities.

Many graduates struggle to find stable jobs, and a large number of people work in the informal sector without job security or adequate income.

Therefore, SDG 8 is essential because it promotes:

Job creation for young people

Economic empowerment

Reduction of poverty

Development of sustainable businesses

It provides a pathway for countries to strengthen their economies while improving the quality of life of their citizens.

My Personal Vision and Commitment

As Yohana Yuliya Dolce Mbem, a business student at The ICT University, I strongly identify with the values of SDG 8.

I believe that entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful tools to create change. In my future, I aspire to build businesses that not only generate profit but also create employment opportunities for others, especially young people.

My vision is to contribute to a society where young individuals are empowered, financially independent, and capable of shaping their own futures. I want to be part of a generation that transforms challenges into opportunities through innovation and determination.

In addition, I am committed to promoting fair and ethical working conditions, where individuals are respected and valued for their contributions.

The Role of Young People in Achieving SDG 8

Young people play a crucial role in achieving SDG 8. With creativity, digital skills, and ambition, they have the potential to drive economic growth and innovation.

However, they need:

Access to education and skills development

Support for entrepreneurship

Opportunities to enter the job market

By investing in youth, societies can unlock enormous economic potential and ensure long-term sustainability.

Conclusion

In conclusion, SDG 8 is more than just a development goal; it is a powerful vision for a better future. It addresses some of the most pressing challenges faced by young people today, particularly in developing countries.

For me, SDG 8 represents ambition, responsibility, and impact. It aligns with my goals as a business student and my desire to contribute to economic growth and social progress.

By promoting decent work and sustainable economic development, we can build a future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
